What the statute asks
N.C. Gen. Stat. § 36C-8-810 provides that a trustee keeps adequate records of the administration of the trust; keeps the trust property separate from the trustee's own; and causes the trust property to be designated so that the trust's interest, to the extent feasible, appears in records kept by someone other than a trustee or beneficiary — several trusts' property may be invested as a whole where the records clearly show each one's interest.
The records the report draws on
A report sent at least annually and at termination describing the trust property, liabilities, receipts and disbursements — including the source and amount of the trustee's compensation — and listing the assets with their market values is the statute's safe harbor for the information duty (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 36C-8-813(b)(2)). A ledger kept as the administration goes is the raw material for it.
Signing as trustee
A trustee who signs a document for the trust signs as trustee (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 36C-11-1104), and adding "trustee" or "as trustee" to a contract signature is prima facie disclosure of the fiduciary capacity — a trustee who discloses it is not personally liable on a contract properly made in that capacity (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 36C-10-1010(a)).
How long records matter
No proceeding for breach of trust may be commenced more than five years after the first of the trustee's removal, resignation or death, the end of the beneficiary's interest or the trust's termination (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 36C-10-1005(a)); records kept through that time are what answer a question.

Questions fréquentes
Can a North Carolina trustee keep trust money in a personal account?
No. The trustee keeps the trust property separate from the trustee's own property (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 36C-8-810(b)).
What records should a North Carolina trustee keep?
Adequate records of the administration (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 36C-8-810(a)) — in practice the receipts, disbursements, statements, valuations and decisions a report or a question would need.
How long should a North Carolina trustee keep records?
The statute sets no retention period; the five-year outside bar on proceedings for breach of trust (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 36C-10-1005(a)) is the period records most often answer for.
